Built from the design. Not from a theme.

Website development at Empyria means building the approved design by hand on WordPress, with the entire design system in one stylesheet and no purchased theme underneath it. It suits businesses whose sites have to be fast on bad connections and survive years of updates, and it takes three to five weeks after design.

How it goes

What the build phase actually involves

Four stages. The first one is the reason the last one is boring, which is what you want from a launch.

  1. The design system becomes a stylesheet

Tokens, type scale, spacing steps and components, written once as the single source of truth. Every page after that is assembled from things that already exist, which is why page five costs a fraction of page one.

  2. Templates, then pages

The builder holds structure and class names only; appearance lives in the stylesheet. It means a change to the type scale is one edit rather than forty, and it means the site does not rot the first time someone edits a page in a hurry.

  3. Performance and accessibility as constraints, not a pass at the end

Self-hosted subset fonts, no framework loaded to draw a heading, images sized and lazy-loaded below the fold, focus states that survive a keyboard. Retrofitting any of this after launch costs more than doing it once.

  4. Handover

Hosting, domain, DNS, database, admin, and a written map of what is where. Fifteen minutes on a call and you can run it, or hand it to anyone else.

Deliverables

What you receive

A site with no theme underneath it

Nothing purchased, nothing to renew, nothing that breaks when a marketplace vendor loses interest.

One stylesheet, documented

The whole design system in a file you own, commented well enough that another developer can pick it up.

Speed as a measured number

Core Web Vitals checked on a throttled connection, not on the office fiber.

Accessibility done properly

Real heading outlines, keyboard paths, focus states and contrast; checked, not assumed.

Schema and metadata

Title, description, canonical, Open Graph and structured data on every template.

Every credential

Hosting, domain, DNS, database, admin. Yours from day one, not on request.

What it costs

Development is part of a project, and projects start at $10,000

Design and development are quoted together. Most complete projects land between $10,000 and $25,000, and the number is fixed in writing before anything starts.

Build-only engagements; you bring a finished design, I build it - are quoted case by case. They work when the design is genuinely finished, which is rarer than anyone expects; a folder of images is not a design system, and the difference shows up as questions I have to answer for you.

How the three services fit together
Fit

Who this is for, and who it is not

It suits a site that has to be fast on a bad connection

If a meaningful share of your traffic is on a phone with one bar, speed is not a score in a report. It is whether the page was seen.

It suits a business that intends to keep the site for years

Hand-built costs more on day one and less every year after, because nothing in it expires and nothing in it depends on a vendor's pricing page.

It does not suit a site you expect to replace in eighteen months

If the plan is a rebrand next year, buy a good template and spend the difference on the rebrand.

It does not suit someone who wants to drag blocks around after launch

Is it WordPress?

Questions

Answered plainly

Is it WordPress?

Yes, with Bricks as the builder and a custom child theme that holds the entire design system. WordPress because you can hire for it anywhere and it is genuinely yours; a custom child theme because that is what makes it fast.

Can we edit it ourselves?

Text, images, pages and posts, yes, and I will show you how. The design system is deliberately not editable from the front end, because a system anyone can override is not a system.

What about hosting?

Yours, in your name, on your card. I will tell you what to buy and set it up. I do not resell hosting, because a studio that owns your hosting owns your exit.

What happens if you disappear?

You have every credential from day one, the stylesheet is documented, and there is nothing proprietary in the build. Any competent WordPress developer can pick it up. That is the test a build should pass and most do not.

What happens next

Bring me the slowest page you have.

It is the most useful thing you can bring to a first call. Thirty minutes, no deck, and a straight answer about whether this is a fit before either of us spends anything.
